Accessible care starts with an accessible website

Family Health Centers of Southwest Florida provides medical, dental and behavioral health care to thousands of patients across Lee County. We designed and launched their website in 2019 and have hosted and supported it since.

As a HRSA-funded health center, FHC is required by the HHS Section 504 rule to meet WCAG 2.1 AA accessibility standards. We ran a full audit of the site, logged every issue by page and WCAG criterion, and fixed the problems at the source: color contrast, heading structure, alt text, form labels, keyboard focus, carousel controls and third-party plugin output.

We used the same eight-phase process on several other Southwest Florida health center websites, each finished with a compliance report and a published accessibility statement.

Results

A perfect accessibility score, without a redesign.

FHCSWFL.org now scores 100 out of 100 for accessibility in Google Lighthouse. Patients who rely on screen readers, keyboard navigation or larger text can find locations, services and appointment information, and the organization has documentation in hand for its compliance requirements.
